We are very fortunate to be approached by people all over the world who want to help Adara. Our Development Philosophy is that we always try to find a local person on site to do a job, before we take any foreign volunteers. As a result, we actually rarely take volunteers to our country sites, other than volunteers that have specialist skills that can't be found locally. We do take volunteers interested in supporting our Sydney and USA-based offices.
To date, we have received amazing volunteer assistance. Most of the few volunteers we do take in-country are doctors and nurses who spend time in Uganda training staff at Kiwoko Hospital. For the past 11 years, we have also had volunteers in Seattle who collect, sort and pack Uganda-bound medical equipment and supplies at the annual Packathon in the USA. Adara volunteers run fundraising events to support us, help with administrative tasks and make videos for us, among many other tasks! Thank you so much to all of you who believe in the Adara dream.
OUR DIFFERENT VOLUNTEERS
Adara has established key relationships with hospitals and medical volunteers to support our healthcare activities in Uganda. These volunteers build capacity in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the maternity health care department at Kiwoko Hospital.
Adara Clinical Practice Manager coordinates all communication and visits of medical volunteers to Kiwoko Hospital. She ensures that work done with Kiwoko staff is focussed specifically on the wants and needs of the community and the hospital.
In 2014 we held our last Packathon. We are so grateful for all the support we have received from all of the volunteers and supporters over eleven incredible years of delivering these much needed supplies to women and children at Kiwoko Hospital. The reason for no longer holding the Packathon is that in the past, we could not access specialist neonatal equipment in Uganda and needed to access this equipment elsewhere. But our plan and hope has always been to help Kiwoko Hospital be more sustainable and access equipment locally through high quality suppliers who can provide direct repair and maintenance for all their equipment. We are thrilled that after 11 years we have reached this stage of development, and can now access the equipment we need through local suppliers. We are especially grateful to the team of volunteers from these 10 hospitals in the Greater Seattle Area who made sure that Kiwoko Hospital was well supplied.:
- Evergreen Hospital Medical Center
- Overlake Hospital Medical Center
- Providence Regional Medical Center Everett
- Seattle Children's Hospital
- Providence Medical Center Olympia
- Whidbey General Hospital
- Swedish Medical Center
- Northwest Hospital and Medical Center
- University of Washington Medical Center
- Tacoma General Hospital
Stay tuned for more Seattle volunteering opportunities in the future!
Adara also has lots of local volunteers who work in our various offices as and when the need arises. We are very grateful for their support. Click here if you would like to volunteer
