When we think about exactly what drives our work at Adara, a few words come to mind: integrity, humility, transparency, purpose. Purpose. It’s at the heart of all we do; from the dusty roads of Kiwoko, the alleyways of Humla, to some of Sydney’s most prestigious board rooms and offices. Whether working with newborns in rural Uganda or working on a deal, purpose is embedded in our DNA.
Purpose is what drives our Panel Members when they put down their heads, pull out their laptops and direct their efforts to generating money for those living in extreme poverty. It’s what ensures our offices are full of energy and laughter. It’s what keeps us all going at the end of a long day, when we’re tired and aching for bed and sleep.
This sense of purpose is precisely why our businesses are B Corps. It’s why they are proud to be B Corps, and stand with the growing number of organisations around the globe leveraging the power of business to make a real difference.
B Corps are for-profit companies certified to meet rigorous standards of social and environment performance, accountability, and transparency. They are companies proven to be using business as a force for good. They are organisations proven to have purpose underpinning their strategy and mission.
This is something we have always strived to do. From our beginnings, 20 years ago, we have been driven by a desire to demonstrate that the halls of business and power have incredible potential to facilitate change for communities in need. Why not bridge the world of business and privilege, with the world of poverty? Why not use our mastery for purpose?
When we first heard about the B Corp movement, we knew it was something we needed to be a part of. Our first business, Adara Advisors, completed the assessment and was certified as a B Corp in February 2016. Our newest business, Adara Partners, followed shortly after.
Being a B Corp means a lot to us. It means we get to be a part of a movement of likeminded organisations that recognise the power of business for good. It means a set of standards we can hold ourselves up to. It means accountability and transparency. It means recognition that we’re a part of something, and that what we’re doing is working.
We are excited that the business for purpose movement is growing. It fills us with hope for the future of business. CEOs and Boards are starting to recognise that purpose beyond profit is no longer simply desirable, it is essential. People don’t look at us like we’re crazy anymore when they hear about our business model. They look at us with admiration and understanding, because now it makes perfect sense for a corporate advisory business to fund service delivery to the poor.
We know that B Corp certification has played a huge role in this shifting mindset.
We are so proud to be a B Corp!
