Aspen and Adara: The power of business to affect social change

Adara has had the great privilege of partnering with Aspen as part of Aspen’s global corporate social responsibility programme since 2007. Aspen is a leading global insurance and reinsurance company, and one of Adara’s cornerstone corporate partners. Aspen’s 14-year commitment to a deeply embedded partnership has shown the exponential impact of linking the business sector with those in need in the developing world.

Over the years, Aspen staff at all levels, from across offices worldwide, have been actively engaged in this collaboration. It is an excellent example of Sustainable Development Goal 17 in action: Partnerships for the Goals and has had a hugely positive impact on vulnerable communities globally, demonstrating just what is possible.

To date Aspen has donated over US$4.6million and Aspen staff have fundraised over US$1.4million – an incredible achievement.  Aspen’s partnership with Adara has directly impacted hundreds of thousands of people in need through Adara’s work in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and remote community development (RCD). Aspen’s support has allowed us to expand and grow our work, and share our knowledge, reaching countless more lives and having global impact. Aspen have been an integral partner of our work with Kiwoko Hospital, Uganda. Aspen was fundamental in helping us to build a brand new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and maternity ward, plus six private delivery suites in 2009. The NICU has since been named a Centre of Excellence in Newborn care by the Ugandan Ministry of Health.

Adara-Aspen Ambassador

Aspen is a participant of the UN Global Compact movement, aligning its company values to the ten principals set out by the UNGC, and is also recognised as a leader in the insurance industry for their commitment to CSR. This partnership has not only united Aspen staff across the world around an important social cause but has improved staff morale, and in a staff survey many stated that one of the reasons they were most proud to work for Aspen was the Adara/Aspen partnership.

From 2007 to 2019, 96 staff members have had the opportunity to travel to Adara’s project sites to see the work firsthand and have since become ambassadors for Adara within Aspen, leading fundraising and awareness raising initiatives. This has had a deep impact on Aspen staff culture, unity and team building.

Adara representatives have presented over the years to many Aspen offices and teams, including London, Zurich, New York, Rocky Hill, and Singapore. These presentations have helped to build a sense of pride amongst staff to be working at Aspen, and a deep passion for this partnership.

This partnership has allowed Aspen to promote the philanthropic focus of their organisation to clients, and to build a positive reputation in the wider community. Our partnership has been featured in publications such as Insurance Business Magazine, one of the world’s leading business magazines for the insurance industry.

We are so grateful to Aspen for their support, and for showcasing the power of great businesses to effect social change and to transform the lives of people from one end of the world to the other.
